The other day, I was listening to a podcast, the Chemist Corner. It said that the aging of skin depends greatly on our genes, 65%.  That leaves us only 35% to work on only. Sad, isn’t it? Also, it mentioned that sunlight and smoking enhance the aging process too. But drinking alcohol doesn’t show much effect. If you wanna avoid aging as much as possible, put on sunscreen and quit smoking, drinking is fine though. So, drinking alcohol doesn’t do much to your skin. But wearing it is a totally different thing.

Alcohol is very dehydrating, it’s easy to evaporate due to its low boiling point. And while it’s evaporating, it takes away the water too. But the way alcohol kills bacteria is by dissolving their cell membrane(confirmed). When you apply alcohol to your skin, it’s like pumping the water out of your skin. For oily skin, more oil will be secreted. Oil is secreted in order to prevent our skin from drying out. When alcohol takes away the water in your skin, more oil will be secreted to keep the skin moist. And for dry skin, it will get drier. Either case, alcohol is no good. That’s why nowadays, many products have a large Alcohol-Free written on them. (btw, if you have oily skin, you would like to look for an oil-free product too).

But you can’t avoid alcohol forever. Products contain no alcohol are usually skincare products, like toners. On the other hand, some cleansers, like a hand sanitizer, contain lots of it. (Here’s a tip for checking ingredients. They are usually listed in order, not alpha order of course. Let’s say you read: water(aqua), alcohol… That means, that product contains mostly water, then alcohol, then… ) That’s why I think you should wash with hand sanitizers that often, your hands are usually not that dirty and do not need to be that clean. To me, soap is enough already. Let’s say you need to use hand sanitizers, what should you do afterwards? Use some hand cream! The same goes to face. You should moisturize your skin, with an alcohol-free product, soon after you clean it with alcohol (this is kinda like damage control, isn’t it?)

I hope this will help you!

Things to look forward to with the coming of September

I guess for most of us, September is never really a month that we would look forward to. Neither do I. But can we avoid the coming of September, which means the start of a new school year hence, more work ? I don’t think so, unless you can switch time back to the very first day of our summer holiday. Well, there’s really not much we can do about it except finish the homework we totally left behind in a rush.

Hold on, September can also means something else, something more cheerful than back to school. Here’re the things I look forward to in September, I try to remind myself of them so that I would feel less depressed.

1. Return of Glee Yes, I am a big Glee fan. C’mon, the show is fun! And the music is great! I love the Glee’s version of Rolling in the Deep, Hello and … pretty much every song that Rachel and Jesse sing. And I’m quite upset about the fact that Jonathan Groff(he plays Jesse) is not a regular yet, he’s like the cutest guy on the show and the best male vocal too. But I’m still welcoming the Season 3 of Glee with open arms.

2. Return of House I love House too. Who doesn’t? He’s a miserable sexy humorous MD. The plot of House is always great, surprising and never was a cliche in the show. What’s not to love? I’m hoping to see Masters too, she’s such a lovely girl. But that’s not very likely though.

3. Return of Gossip Girl  Well, Gossip Girl’s plot is quite cheesy I gotta say. Just that it’s still fun to watch, you know, with everybody dressing up and looking beautiful, especially Blake Lively! I have given up my hope on Gossip Girl will have a good storyline ages ago. To me, watching it is like watching Fashion shows, it’s all about the outfits. So yes, I’m looking forward to it.

Now, I look like couch potato. The top 3 things I look forward to are all TV series. Well, I enjoy doing complete nothing at all and just watch my favorite shows for a whole day. It’s relaxing. I’ll get tired of that after a while of doing so, but that doesn’t mean I don’t look for days like this.  Of course, there’re more than just TV series to look forward to.

4. MAC Pro Longwear (is longwear one word or not, I don’t know!) This line has been in the States for a really long time but not for Hong Kong T_T The line is coming on October, so with September coming, it’s a bit closer. I wanna try out the Pro Longwear SPF 10 Foundation so bad! The reviews have been so great and I just wanna try it out myself.

5. IPhone 5/ IPone 4S Apple is like the most genius brand in the world, always surprise people with unexpected things. I’m using a Nokia now, but I’m seriously consider getting a IPhone once I actually settle down in HK (instead of traveling back and forth). The phone companies here just offer a lot of tempting plans

I guess that’s all. I mean, if I can choose to have my summer back again, I would rather summer than September. But just look to the bright side.

5 Shopping Reminders for Makeup Newbies

I think of myself as a makeup newbie too. And here’s my own reminders for myself when I go shop for makeup.

Shopping for makeup can get annoying(but still, we all enjoy it), you just don’t see the effect immediately! When you go buy a dress, you can always try it out and da da, you see what you look like in it. But when it comes to makeup, you just don’t know. Some shops do not offer testers or samples, this just make it even harder. Some shops do offer testers or samples, still, you only know the product texture. You don’t know which shade to choose or if it’s as long lasting as it claims to be.

And like clothes, there’re always higher-end brands and budget brands. Which one to choose?

I hope this post is useful for you.

1. Always do the research!!! There’re reasons that I put this reminder in the first place. You just can’t trust the adverts! Just because the adverts say that it’s good and the models looks great doesn’t make it true. The adverts lies all the time. My best solution for this dreadfully annoying situation is, google it, see what others say about it. I sometimes spend days to read the reviews. Trust me, I know the rush in you heart when you first see the adverts. Take some time to do the research help calms it down. You might not want it after a few days of thinking about it. If you buy it that fast, it would be a waste. If you still want it after reading the reviews, go get it then. This reminder can be a money saver.

2. Bargain!!! I believe a Chanel product does a better job than a Revlon one. But think again. A Chanel one costs A LOT, while the Revlon really doesn’t cost much. However, the difference of effect they make just doesn’t worth the price difference.  When it comes to makeup, there’re products that just can’t last long. For example, you can only use a mascara for up to 6 months, it either dries out by then or full of bacteria that’s no longer safe to use. Here’s what the bargain for. When you shop for mascara and liquid eyeliner, lip gloss, basically anything liquid, you go for budget brands. Liquid things don’t last long, it’s quite a waste of money if you splurge on them.

3. Test before buy!!! What’s good for everyone might not be good for you. Just because you read dozens of good reviews about a product doesn’t mean it will work well on you. To find out the truth is always testing it yourself. The product might have a teeny tiny scent problem that people can usually ignore, but that flaw might freak you out. You’ll never know unless you test for yourself. Some stores do not offer testing, eg. online stores, just don’t buy anything there unless you have a specific idea in mind, by that I mean you know exactly which product, which shade…

4. Splurge!!! Okay, I know it’s a bit weird because I just say Bargain!!! To me, I bargain some and splurge some. You wanna splurge on your face product, like foundation. You really don’t wanna take a risk of buying something cheaper then cause a breakout, right? I would rather spend more on a foundation once, than using a dupe then have a breakout and do the damage control and then know that I should have splurge on foundation and buy again. So I invest more on foundation, I’m using the MAC studio fix fluid which is amazing btw, definitely lives up to its claims. Well, when I say splurge, I didn’t mean I’ll get a Dior foundation, MAC is enough for me and lots of you out there too. Of course, splurge or bargain is really up to you.

5. Buy makeup removers!!! Some people think that they don’t need the makeup removers as they have facial cleansers. Well, guess what? Facial cleansers are not enough, especially when it comes to waterproof makeup. I once tried out a Revlon ColorStay eyeliner on my hand, I drew a line and it took a few minutes to get rid off it with makeup removers, needless to mention other cleaning products. I read about using baby oil or olive oil can do the job. I tried the baby oil, and it was a mess. The baby oil can dissolve the waterproof makeup but it’s so hard to wash away as it can’t emulsify when it meets water. I washed my face 3 times and it still felt oily, so I ended up using a remover wipe. If you are thinking about something stronger, like a soap or alcohol( are you insane?), well, I hope you will be satisfied with how bad your skin gets  after a while of doing so.

I know, some may sound like a no brainer, but I really hope that it will help some of you out there who’re clueless. And one thing I learned after writing this, I really should learn how to write less!! Sorry! 😛

If you have any questions, please just ask me in the comment. I’ll be more than happy to help you.

Read This First

Just so we can be clear, I think of myself as a makeup newbie too.

I only started makeup like a year ago and until 6 months ago, I only put on mascara, eye liner and concealer. And even now, what I wear are only foundation/BB cream, setting power, eyebrow liner, lipstick/lipgloss and eye liner, mascara, concealer, which I think is really not much, just very basic. I mean, I still don’t wear blush/bronzer, eyeshadow or anything I didn’t mention above. And I definitely don’t own a dozens of makeup brushes. You know what, I’m going to do a post later(not later this day, next month is more likely), about what do I own, then you can decide how much of a newbie I am.

I’m a student and I’m not born with a silver spoon. That means, I’m usually on a budget. So, I’m not likely to wear a Dior mascara or any higher-end brands like that. I’m more into drugstore brand. Actually, I shop in Hong Kong, my “drugstore” would be stores like Watsons, Mannings, Sasa, Bonjour(They are pretty much like drugstore in States).  Well, that’s quite reader-friendly(I hope I’m not being arrogant :P), you can easily follow me if you want to.

Ok, now, you can go on and scroll down the page.

Oops, almost forgot this. Under this category, I include things about makeup. That being, product reviews, makeup tips, looks recreation… anything about makeup goes to this category. And I do include makeup removers here too. Most people put them under skincare, but I think, you don’t buy makeup remover unless you buy makeup. That makes it more makeup-related than skincare-related.

My Very First Docs

After years of yearning for a pair of Dr.Martens, I finally got one, the famous 1460, on 20th,Aug.  And it’s quite different from what I expected.

I bought it in Mong Kok, Hong Kong. A store I believe where I bought my first All-Star too. Not that I like that store very much, it just happened that I walk past by it almost every time I’m looking for shoes in Mong Kok and they had what I was looking for. Maybe I should put it in my favorite stores list, but then again, I really don’t go there, that store or Mong Kok often enough.

Back to docs. I always thought that docs should be very comfy, soft, the kind of shoes that once you put your feet in, you don’t wanna get them out. Well, I was so ignorant. I usually do a lot of research before I go shop for something, but somehow, it didn’t occur to me that I should go and see what others think about them. I just rushed into the store and ask for them. It was just so not me.

It’s different from what I expected,  but in a neutral way. Docs is very tough, not just the way it looks, but the way it feels too. I didn’t get the soft and comfy feeling when I tried it out in store, the leather was quite stiff(can you use stiff to describe leather?), it felt weird. Usually when shoes that hard are not good for walking, I felt fine walking in it but I can’t really scratch my ankles though.

After hours of walking in it, amazingly, I felt fine. I have to admit that I was tired, my feet were exhausted. But hey, I walked for over 10 hours! So you can’t really blame it on the shoes. Especially when I felt perfectly okay and totally ready for another long walk again after I sat resting for 20-30 minutes. That’s quite remarkable for a pair of shoes I would say!

Overall, I love my docs. Even though they are really stiff, they are still very comfy.

More pics of docs

I can’t never understand how Agyness can stand like that in docs. I just can’t! If I stand in a posture like Agyness, my right knee will bend and my center of gravity will go to my right feet. Because, like I said, I can’t scratch my ankles in docs. I don’t know how she did it. Maybe that’s why she a supermodel.
